Yes, it may be 3-5 years, but Coog fans are notorious for one game and out. Some did not even show up for the one game. So, he will have to do the rebuild with no fans, they will never support the losing through a rebuild. Once they win, maybe.
We were pretty short of even the “one game” fans this weekend. I rarely miss games, but my seats will probably be empty for the Rice game if the guys don’t show something against OU, and I’m sure there are others feeling the same way.
Fritz doesn’t have to win every game, but he has to put the guys in position to give fans something besides a kick in the nuts. If they want a good crowd, they’re gonna have to earn it and understand that last week is gonna leave a mark even when/if they do turn it around.
I don’t really care about postgame press conferences, recruiting rankings or the really awesome video board if we can’t at least lose in a way that offers some glimmer of hope. The bar isn’t that high.
Haven’t missed a home game since '76. I have sat through many bad games and many bad seasons, but I ain’t gonna stop now.
I realize we brought in a program builder. He is proven at that. The problem is with this hiring strategy is that it is taking place during the NIL era. Gone are the days of 4 year starters/players and unless we pay big ourselves its going to be very tough sledding turning this program around needing a bunch of career players “bought in” on the Fritz way.
Fritz has said it is about recruiting, retaining, and developing. He also has spent a ton of time working on NIL and getting the buy in of stakeholders. He understands what his job is. Game 1 was disappointing but let’s let things play out before we annoint him a failure.

Yep. Just ask Nick Saban - this is the main reason why you see him on Gameday instead of the sidelines now.
We don’t have 3-4 years, and that is the truth. We all know it but don’t want to say it out loud.
It we are still a mediocre football team in 2030 then we are likely left out of any further expansions/realignments.
Saban saw where CFB was going and said: I ain’t doing this crap.
But he’s the GOAT. He could have walked away at any time

I’d probably end up being right there with you if I didn’t have to invest in a 4-hour each way to do it. But I don’t have that kind of attendance streak to maintain, either.
Agree. You don’t hire an experienced coach and pay top dollar for that kind of timeframe.
- We don’t pay top dollar; not even close.
- How a coach does in his first year is determined by who he was left with, how soon in the year he was hired, how much is in the NIL bank. Our bank is pathetic in comparison to the other B12 teams and a whole bunch of G5 teams. Most of our best players departed for a bag elsewhere. Our OL hasn’t had the time it takes to gel.
CWF had as good a recruiting class of 2024 as could be expected, even more so considering the 2 things listed above. His 2025 class is looking great. He is grooming his freshmen, redshirt freshmen, and sophomores and that takes time. But you guys go on and expect miracles, I will support CWF and be patient enough for reasonable progress.
YOU CHILL OUT!!!
I wonder was the percentage of CFB coaches in P4 who dont win in their first 2-3 years and then go on an compete for conference championships
David Cutcliffe went 4-8 in 08 and 09. He won the acc coastal division in 2013 but lost the championship.
Before that the only coaches that had back to back losing seasons to start their tenure and win a conference championship eventually are Barry Alvarez at Wisconsin. 1-10 in 1990 and 5-6 in 1991. 1993 big ten champs. Then there was Billy Snyder. 1-10 in 1989 and 5-6 in 1990 with big 12 championship in 2003. That is over the last 50 years.
So from what I can see it has happened twice and not in the last 30 years.
Much easier when he could make millions watching kids smash their brains for a college degree.
?
He was playing in the NIT in year 2. He was in the tourney in year 4. He was playing in a Final Four in year 7. Sampson had a 1 year rebuild. Which is remarkable with the joke of a program he inherited. Idk why people always do this with Sampson.
Sampson also didn’t have the transfer portal at his disposal like coaches do nowadays.
I’m going to say it again…UNLV was one of the easiest teams on our schedule and we got smoked.
Maybe we should wait to see how the season plays out before making that claim. At this point, it’s pure bias speculation based on conference affiliation. We really have no idea how good they are.
You know, years ago people used to make similar claims against UH since we played in a G5 conference that had an overall weaker schedule. This was the claim from most people at P5 schools and the pundits on TV. That didn’t stop us from beating a team like Florida State in the Peach bowl, smoking UCLA at Robertson Stadium, or embarrassing OSU in Stillwater when they were ranked in the Top 5.
The fact is, we were much better than most P5 teams those years, regardless of playing in a G5 conference.
If it turns out UNLV isn’t very good, OK. We’ll find out more about them as a season progresses. All I know is, they had a senior laden team with an all-American WR, a good QB, and what appeared to be improved defense from a defensive-minded coach that hired an up-n-coming OC. Honestly, Coach Odem reminds me a lot of a young Gary Patterson. Just look at what he did as a G5 coach.
I wonder was the percentage of CFB coaches in P4 who dont win in their first 2-3 years and then go on an compete for conference championships
To me a much more relevant line of thinking would be:
I wonder what percentage (if any) of P4 football coaches with a bottom 5% (non competitive) NIL program will be able to compete successfully for a conference championship within the next 10 years?
[REMINDER TO SELF: Nick Saban couldn’t compete and win with UH’s current FB roster.]
But you guys go on and expect miracles
If expecting a competitive game against UNLV is considered a miracle, well, you and I have different understandings of divine intervention.
And yeah, we’re paying Fritz top dollar for a guy with his resume. His salary puts him squarely in the middle of B12 coaches without ever having coached a game in that conference.
Seriously, is “Excuses 101” a prerequisite for all degree programs at the University of Houston?
So, do you really think that a program like UH with a bottom 5% NIL program could offer a below market wage and be able to attract an above average (ie: winning) coach? I certainly don’t.
Personally, I think that the UH FB coaching job is made extremely difficult due to our lack of NIL funding.
At the same time however, I’m hopeful that our AD can increase our NIL funding and Coach Willie Fritz can get 'er done (ie: winning) sooner rather than later.
