Sophomore thrower Felipe Valencia will continue the championship season for the Houston Cougar Track & Field team when he represents team Mexico at the IX North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) U23 Championships on Sunday, July 17 at Estadio Nacional Jorge “Magico” Gonzalez.
Valencia will compete in the first round of the men’s shot put at 11 p.m., on Sunday in San Salvador, El Salvador with the finals to follow.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON The Cougars will send seven student-athletes to the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland July 19-24.
Freshmen Amere Lattin and Brian Bell will represent team USA, while Mario Burke will run for team Barbados. Lattin will compete in the 110-meter hurdles with a possibility to enter the 4x100- or 4x400-meter relays, while Burke will compete in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and Bell will run the 800-meters.
Five incoming freshmen for the Cougars will be in Poland to represent their countries next week. Nathaniel Melcher will represent team Canada in the decathlon as the lone Cougar men’s signee at the junior championships. On the women’s side, Samiyah Samuels will represent team USA in the long jump, while Cecilia Tamayo will run for team Mexico in the 100- and 200-meter dash and Klara Mattson will compete in the pole vault for team Sweden.
