Early Christmas present s on Signing Day

Sam, Monroe a grades casualty?

Si. Also McMillan. It’s unlikely but not impossible they get things straight by February.

Gotcha, thanks

We arecurrently 6th in the AAC. Better than 8th, but should we not expect better? I think the JUCO surprise was a good get. It will help immediately. 14 out of 15 signed, not great. Even if we only have 20 scholarships to offer, this was rough. Yes, last year we gobbled up players with transfers, but CMA knew what he was doing there, and now we have less to offer and little depth on the defense. CMA has been unimpressive so far on the recruiting front. This is the same coach that had an entire season as OC to work with Kyle Allen and failed. The same coach that still has no offer out there for a DC.

14 signed, losing some to grades (That should be well known long before and never used as an excuse. If the coach does not think a kid can pass math, maybe stop recruiting him) and blaming transfers seems to be okay. I guess we can all lower our expectations a bit.

We have until February to sign the rest of our class, including those whose grades are currently too low. They can fix that by putting their nose to their books. Our average rating per recruit is quite high. No one is lowering their expectations, we’re just looking at the actual facts instead of looking for reasons to complain about Applewhite.
When was the last time we had a haul of OL this big and seemingly good?
And for those that want four stars
we got one in Ceasar and then they dropped a star after he signed. So just remember to compare them to what we normally get, not to UT and A&M etc. Even if we got someone who should be rated as highly, they will make sure they aren’t.

Funny, a number of Applewhite’s harshest critics have been very complimentary of this class and the job Applewhite did to bring it in despite the coordinator situation. Not you, of course. That would be out of character. So, perhaps you’re unaware of this, but a school isn’t going to finish high overall in the rankings when it signs fewer players. The reason we signed a few less is because we brought in several very impressive grad transfers, all but one of whom started or was a major contributor before being injured. Second, UH’s average rating per recruit is second-highest in the conference behind UCF. That is the ranking that really matters, depending on how much stock one puts in Internet recruiting companies. Third, the coaches knew some time ago that two players weren’t fully qualified. They are very good players, however (one is the #11 APB in the nation and the other is an impressive DL), and may still sign in February. UH has to take a few chances since we can’t load up on four-star prospects like a UT can. Finally, UH beat LSU for a DL, Florida for another one, Oklahoma for an OLB, Missouri for an OT, Nebraska for a CB, Colorado for a safety, Boston College for a WR, Iowa State for an OC, etc., and you’re going to complain? Seriously?

I’m not a recruiting guru but if our avg rating per recruit is an 83.5 vs another team at 84.27
there is no way that is much of a difference right?

OU is .9113, but that won’t matter to folks on here when we play.

247 had us 3rd behind Memphis

So maybe next year we will have those high school coach’s connections kick in? They did write a letter in support of CMA.

So we are hinging our class on grades and hope. The hope system has had success in the past.

Lol at blaming Kyle Allen’s failure to perform on Major.

And you really have no clue whether he has made an offer to a DC.

When you look at the quality of the guys signed, it’s a solid class, especially given the perceived situation with our coordinators. But you have to look.

No. And we have to understand that ratings like this aren’t the gospel. Some guys who work for Internet companies and watch some film, in some cases see a few games are not writing their ratings on stone tablets. Few if any of these guys (and some of them do a decent job) have coached at the college level. Sure, everyone wants to sign a class like Alabama does each year, but once you get past the top 40 or so schools (no G5 is in the top 50) it’s really pretty much a crapshoot. Have to remember how many of our top players had only a few small offers or none at all. We’re talking Case, Patrick Edwards (walk-on), Elandon Roberts, Steve Taylor, Cam Malveaux, Alex Cooper, William Jackson, Howard Wilson, Brandon Wilson, etc. I think ratings are more reflective of pure athletic ability than most anything else. They can’t tell you if a kid’s development has stopped or if it will continue or how dedicated he’ll be and so on. But you’re right. There’s really no difference between 83.5 and 84.2. Such a difference is all but meaningless.

Evidently we might get first crack at the kid or maybe even more exposure or “talked up” more. But, ultimately the decision is up to the kid and most of the time the family. You can’t type and tell me you think 4-5 graded recruits are lining up to play here when we as a fan base arent even all the way committed or for that matter content where we are now.

Why should the 4-5 recruit with options at titles? We cant even make the playoff, and the promise of potential inclusion in a “bigger” conference might not even happen in 5 years. Let me know how you think CMA is doing a bad job with the available resources he has at his disposal and the changes made to the Athletic department in only a year.

We signed a full and pretty good class for not going to a Conference championship in 2 years, losing our bowl game last year, and switching out 5 coordinators in 2 years and about 10 in 3. Not to mention we flipped guys who were committed to P5 schools.

Theres only so much a recruit is going to listen too about how good the academics are (because ours are great and only getting better) but the exposure matters and we’ve steadily made progress in 2 years. Just let CMA do his job because these things take time no doubt.

You clearly don’t understand recruiting if you think high school coaches will or even could deliver five-star recruits to UH because they like Applewhite. Good lord. I just told you the P5 teams we beat for players. I don’t know what more anyone could ask. You’re going to find something to be miserable about regardless so even discussing UH athletics with you is a waste of time.

Wish more people realized until we are in a p5 conference these are the type of kids we have to go after. In my opinion there is plenty of great 3 star talent to go around here in Texas.

Some people think that a 6’2 200+ 4 or 5 star is different from a 6’2 200+ 3 star. At the end of the day they’re both Human and can play Football. A good coach coaches him up.

It’s really getting worked up over a whole lot of nothing. Recruiting analysts were impressed with the way we finished early signing, especially given the issues with assistant coaches. But you’re right. We’ve had so many under-recruited and unrecruited players become outstanding at UH, be it Keenum, Newhouse, Roberts, etc. The thing no one can measure—not coaches, not recruiting analysts, not fans—is how players will develop after high school. There’s an OL from Dulles we were close on who blew up when recruiters realized he was still growing. And obviously it’s impossible to say how dedicated a kid will be once he gets on campus.

Recruiting services don’t watch film on every guy and they definitely aren’t as good as college coaches are if they do evaluate guys. If they were, they’d be college coaches.

Most rely on offers in how they rate kids. If a kid gets offers from most of the blue bloods, they’ll get a better rating as the services assume the blue bloods know what they’re doing. If a guy gets G5 offers, he’ll be a low 3 star. If a guy gets offers from good P5’s, but commits to Houston, he’ll probably end up a high 3* (see Ceaser this year). If a kid commits to Alabama or Texas, his rating will get bumped up.

Sam says past the top 40 schools it’s a crapshoot
I’d probably go with Top 25. Too much emphasis is placed on the recruiting rankings each year, but it generates lots of discussion and clicks so the sites won’t change. In the end, those rankings don’t measure heart and how well a coach can develop players.

Wish the sites, or someone, would rank classes 5 years after signing day. Recruiting Sites probably don’t want to do it because they don’t want to undermine their business, but it would be an interesting article if someone else was willing to do it. Surprised no one in the national media does it.

Seems like BYU has had trouble recruiting with all the money and resources they have. Last two recruiting cycles have been a few points behind us.

Not sure Independence has been what BYU fans thought it would be. They were hoping to be Notre Dame, but they aren’t on that level and it’s hurting them on the field.

Got a feeling they’ll be in a conference once the current TV contract runs out.
