Daily Cougar: Pezman on why Whiting is getting a new contract

I’ve heard the recruiting side of the argument. I mean, its like saying we need to keep recruiting mediocre
because a new staff would be recruiting blind. That’s true but you go through that every time you change coaches, right? Why is this time different? Because tenth place in b12 baseball is so much better than last? I just don’t understand the substance of that position.

So did Couch and Anderson get hired away for more money or not? Just asking for a friend?

Does anyone think that Tennessee didn’t offer Frank Anderson a big raise to move to the SEC or that South Carolina didn’t offer Trip Couch a big raise to move to the SEC followed by Arizona in the PAC?

So did UT offer Tom Herman more money or not?

It seems clear that for the past 20+ years, whenever a team wins big at an underfunded G5 program, it isn’t long before a better funded P5 program hires away the top coaching talent and now (with NIL) even your top player talent. . It is what it is!

UH has always had coaches hired away. Look at it this way. In the 2023 NCAA baseball tourney there were 33 schools (g5 and below) seeded to begin regionals. I didn’t look at the three years previous but I’m guessing it was in that same percentile, give or take three or four schools. What resources, facilities, money, recruiting advantage did this group of schools have the last four years that we didn’t have?

Tillman said before Tom left, "He will not leave because of money."Fertitta was ready to match the offer. Tom just went to UT because it’s the better job. It had nothing to do with being “underfunded”.

So go find another. It’s been done before. Do it again. That’s Todd’s job, find good coaches. There are lots of good coaches out there and schools with less budget than us manage to find them.

If we can’t manage to find decent coaches because we don’t have enough money, we should just shut the program down. Frank and Trip aren’t the only good coaches out there though.

And btw, we have a good one right now in Kivett.

True. In fact our football program went through a series of almost 100% staff turnover five times and still managed to stay at least nationally relevant. Its been our M.O. for over 20 years.

I really couldn’t believe some of the things Chris said in that interview. Does he not think that we will read it?

Why couldn’t he say something like “UH is in a college baseball hotbed in the Houston Metro area. We demand and should demand top performance year in and year out. We have set ourselves up from a facilities standpoint and should set ourselves up from a coaching standpoint.” !!!

It’s really a bad look on him. If I were him, I wouldn’t have taken the interview.

For one of you more knowledgeable folks out there than me, what is the level of UH’s current NIL program for baseball players compared to the same at say UT-Austin or ATM or TCU or even at Rice?

It insulted the intelligence.
Very relevant points IF the argument is why UH is not a Top 25 powerhouse.
UH is not even a top 100 program despite location and good facilities.
Run ruled by Southland & WAC schools.
4 NCAAs in 13 seasons for Whit. 4 losing seasons.

UH was 15-14 vs 250th ranked non-conference strength of schedule.
Do they not have the staff/ facilities to hang w those schools?

Exactly. We haven’t made a regional since 2018.

It’s not that we aren’t competing with the top programs. Forget that, we aren’t even close to being a top 50 program and we were at one point.

Yeah, but he was building the player development center.

We’re shooting for the 2024 NCAA Intramural Championships !

But will we host a regional?

Anybody care to answer this pertinent question?

I know everybody is complaining about the new pitching coach, but I don’t think you are being fair to him. Most of you are just mad about TW getting to keep his job and the hiring of the new coach is just a byproduct of that situation. I don’t blame you. However, I don’t think the hire, at this point, is a bad one. His Georgia teams had an ERA of 5.65 in '22 and 3.63 in '21. Those are some pretty legit numbers in the SEC. I think we would take that in a second in the Big 12. I don’t know how he is going to do at UH but he deserves a chance. Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind after I see how the fall goes!

To be blunt, it sucks! They are supposed to be working on improving it this year. Time will tell!

Can’t answer that one for you. I do know we’ll probably never be at the NIL level of TU or ATM, especially in a sport that doesn’t produce large revenue…but…no excuses for how far off the cliff it’s fallen. No chance UIW, TAMCC, UTRGV, LU, Sam, UT Arlington, UTSA have larger NIL that UH either. Pez’ excuse of now giving CTW resources to now hire assistants is weak sauce…there’s a reason others have hired the likes of Anderson and Couch but haven’t tried to hire away the Big Chief. If only reason keeping CTW is because he can raise funds then sack up and say it…“Hey right now we just really don’t have the resources to field a top notch baseball program but we hope to in future”

Bunn was pitching coach at Ole Miss, Alabama and Clemson and then I suppose we lured him away after a two year stint at MTSU.

Sean Kenny spent the last 13 years as pitching coach at Maryland, Michigan and Georgia where I presume he was let go after the Bulldogs missed the NCAAs.

Is Pezman saying that we paid quite a bit more to upgrade the pitching coach? Paid more to keep Kivitt?
