This is why it’s so important for these guys to get their degrees
I disagree; UT is likely a beneficiary of this. Just like now, they can sit and poach guys in their later years of eligibility to fill holes in the roster. They’re gonna wind up using schools like UH as farm teams.
Sarkisian is just using hyperbolic imagery to rabble-rouse all the burnt orange zombies. What does he care how old you are in college?
A twenty-one year old p4 cornerback or safety is as close to a world class athlete as you can get. You think someone twenty-nine is going to intimidate that guy?! Lol He’s gonna hit that guy like a freight train regardless.
I hate to say it, but I think as an institution of higher education, we have lost our way, and we aren’t the only ones. I train a lot of people, and one of the first things I ask is “What is your purpose?” If they can’t give me a relatively specific answer then I don’t hire them as clients. As a university, what is our purpose? To have a football team that doesn’t suck? I think not. I thought we were supposed to be educating people with the end result a student with a degree who can go out for the betterment of society. If UH doesn’t do that for our athletes then what TF are we doing? I agree with you that academics MUST be part of what we are trying to accomplish. I would like the best of both- good athletics and good academics. I have often wondered if we have to pay the kid to play football, does this guy go to class.? Does he get good grades? With all this money floating around, schools had better figure what they expect a “student athlete” to be.
All this is doing is making it so that less kids get a chance at college. Only so many slots and the experienced players can stay longer leaving less spots for underprivileged kids for a chance at a college degree.
Not a bad thing if a guy plays CFB as his profession.
That is what we are talking about.
It just is…
$$$ out at the very end.
Make his next long term move with finance in good shape.
That is the horrible part & 2 how work around it ?
NY State SUNYs have free tuition if adjusted income under $125k.
LSU/ UL La, etc is free for most students w decent grades.
Why is Texas not like that ?
You might be right. Do we have to call them “student athletes” now?
Welcome to the world of semi professional AAA FB like AAA baseball. Guy playing for his college team year 6, my get a call up to the big leagues ( dream scenario for that player) you never know.
I couldn’t agree more. If a college QB is being paid $10.5 million (reportedly) but a Nobel Prize winner teaching at a top school makes $300,000, there is something terribly wrong.
I know athletics is the “front porch” for a university. But if that is the economics for the front porch, I would suggest the money for the front porch would be better spent on the “house” as in going and getting top level Nobel Prize winners for your faculty.
You are right. Unlimited eligibility is on the way.
Classes might be optional since they are now professionals.
The thing that will hurt most is increasing rosters to 105. The scholarship aspect of it is laugh. Why go to school if your nil makes you more than most will earn in their lives.
This will LEAD TO SCHOOLS LIKE TEXAS STOCKPILING POTENTIAL PLAYERS IN jucoS LIKE THEY DID WHEN THERE WAS NO LIMIT ON PLAYERS ON THEIR ROSTERS. THEY RECRUITED PLAYERS TO KEEP THEM AWAY FROM OTHER SCHOOLS BACK IN THE 60’S
Napolean Dynamite came about due to a Mormon mission
Jared Hess was on a mission to Detroit where he met a man. When asked his name replied “Napolean Dynamite”. Jared said “I’m going to use that in a movie I make”
Interesting!
As I said, Mormon missionaries truly work EVERYWHERE.
Funk shouldn’t assume that those BYU missionary players are doing hardship duty in 3rd world countries.
They might very well be knocking on doors in a well-off American suburb. And getting three (or more) squares per day…and hitting the gym when the day is done. Ultimately, most, of not almost all, will get two years of growth and development that players elsewhere likely would not.
And NOW…thanks to the new JUCO rule…BYU could conceivably give someone FIVE years to develop, and start them as a 23 year old true freshman.
How KEWL is that???
Nope. We don’t have time or money for that in a mission. Normally, our workouts were playing basketball in the church gym or some dumbbells that were left in the apartment.
Also, when it comes to meals, rarely did we eat three times a day. Usually, we ate breakfast and then ate with a member for dinner. Those meals were usually huge. I never was really too hungry. Some guys overseas really struggle to get the calories they need. I was in LA.
Ok, fair enough.
Would you say those BYU football players aren’t working out or getting enough food?
Come on now.
I can tell you the missionaries I’ve seen knocking on doors in Katy sure didn’t seem malnourished.
I would imagine those jocks figure out a way to stay in shape and maintain their physiques. Hell, we supposedly have a LB transfer from Utah that did a mission. Are you telling me that he wasn’t working out, staying in shape, or getting adequate nutrition during that time? Looking at the size of him, and those more than two dozen BYU players listed above, that’s hard to imagine.
Am I wrong about that?
The cows have stockpiled players since the 60s, maybe even before that.
NO Juco. Played 5 as frosh.
Waiver denied. Appeal now.
No idea how they argue he needs an extra year BUT
US District Court Northern District next.
Court is a few miles of bars to SUs Carrier Dome.
He led NCAA in passing yards for Cuse.
Just needs a preliminary injunction and its bedlam.
NCAA will never fight every player.
You know what’s not “kewl”? People that use that word
Your take is bizarre……your fascination with Mormons on their missions is bizarro world.
Leave them alone….go track down JM and tell him where he should be spending his money….maybe that will keep you occupied for awhile.
I’m not particularly fascinated with them.
But it’s no secret in the college football world that those BYU football players that go on missions come back bigger and more physically mature…
Only a fool would believe that they aren’t workout out while on their missions.
If they have any hope of competing for playing time, then rest assured, THEY ARE. Now they can even stack JUCO years on top of that!
As for John Moores, you might be the only one here that doesn’t think he should be spending more on his Alma mater than other schools.
Likewise, I feel the same way about my classmate Tony Buzbee, who owes his near billionaire status to his UH law degree, but still gives mostly to aTm.
I criticize him for that as well.
And I’ll continue to do so, regardless of how you feel about it, so my best advice to you is to stop being “fascinated” with my criticisms, and simply learn to deal with them, because you definitely won’t stop me from making them.
Won’t slow me down one bit!
Criticisms of that sort WILL continue unabated, so take notice! Whomever I decide to criticize and for what reason is “my business,” and none of yours, is it not?
