Looking at the total medal count, a few realities become evident.
Certain countries like USA (40 golds, 126 total) and China (40 golds, 91 total) are definitely “big time” or “prime time.”
But consider this. India, with a population of 1.4 billion…won ZERO golds and only one silver…and only six total medals…that’s fewer golds than Saint Lucia, and fewer total medals than countries like Ireland and Israel.
India is definitely NOT ready for prime time, and definitely NOT yet “big time.”
Other small (population wise) countries like Australia and the Netherlands appear to be fighting WELL above their weights!
India doesn’t give a sh— about the Olympics. What’s the problem? I love cricket and I have a favorite team. I’ve seen more matches than the Indian family that owns the convenience store at the edge of my neighborhood. India has bigger fish to fry like 15 languages and dialects and radical Pakistan across the border pointing nuclear weapons at Mumbai.
I’m talking about the composite of international sports. Americans will watch any sport. Curling, gymnastics, shot put, field hockey, etc. When you grow up worshipping sport in general there’s a higher likelihood you’ll be good in one or more
Indians will not f—- watch Curling. They don’t worship sports in general. I brought up Cricket to demonstrate a general disinterest in sports in general (cricket being one of their most popular.)
But your point was they weren’t ready for prime time due to the medal count. Their overall medal count will be low at the next Olympics, too. And the one after, and the one after that. If sports are your religion then they won’t be ready for prime time in your eyes. In their eyes it’s a bit different. They could say we aren’t ready for prime time because our public school students aren’t great at Math.
