Could Tillman Fertitta bring back the WNBA?

Houston Comets reborn?

Now….get us an NHL franchise!

They still have the most titles in the league.

Really?

I didn’t realize that.

I hope he gets this, …AND gets us an NHL franchise.

His sports empire and our city’s pro sports portfolio will then be complete.

Caitlin Clark is responsible for why WNBA ratings increased in the past year. I think this ratings boost can be sustained, but there needs to be more money in marketing teams other than Indiana Fever

Why did they stop the Comets franchise in the first place? Lack of interest?

They were unlucky enough to need to find a new buyer at the height of the Great Recession, basically.

I don’t think this is accurate; the quality of play in the WNBA is way better than it was a decade ago, as is the brand size. I don’t think I could have named two WNBA players off the top of my head a decade ago, as a relatively casual sports fan, whereas nowadays I – a person who, admittedly, has never watched a WNBA game to completion, or probably even a half – could name half a dozen active players off the top of my head.

I’d prefer he focus on bringing the NHL here (how has that not happened?) But, the WNBA is a good growth stock right now.

Have you asked your doctor about this?

I’ll let myself out…

I remember them moving their games to the reliant center. That tells me that the fan interest dwindled.

WMBA will die here, unless women support it and i don’t see that happening long term.

Why don’t you see that happening? What is your insight into the Houston market for women’s basketball? How does it compare with the market for women’s soccer, as the Houston Dash are very likely to be around longer than the original Comets.

We want more pro sports in Houston ? U of H has enough pro sports to compete with already, bb, football, baseball etc we have a hard enough time with attendance as is

I would rather have the NHL

it died before despite winning championships?

That’s the extent of your analysis? That was the situation 20 years ago, the market has changed. I don’t know if it will last either but I know the market for women’s sports is much different, maybe healthier really, than it was from 1994 to 2005 (I think that’s the right dates for the Comets).

its a minor league sport. If they don’t win big no one will watch

So just standard Houston sports then? They’ll fit right in again

I assume you consider NFL, MLB and NBA to be major league sports. What about the NHL?

What would it take for any minor league sports to be considered major league in your opinion? Just trying to understand how you categorize between major and minor.

He thinks women are minor league. That’s what I’m hearing.

Very on brand.
