We have a pro rata with ESPN but not Fox, so we are guaranteed 2/3 for additional teams. The remaining 1/3 would be from negotiating with Fox or selling the additional inventory to another network (which we would have the right to do but the structure would make the additional games not worth very much).
Our continued pursuit of the corner schools suggests we are confident in our ability to negotiate with Fox, are willing to take a slight loss in the short term to better position ourselves in the future, or believe we can back out and force renegotiation because the GOR hasn’t been signed yet (and thus the contract not yet official).
UPDATE: Calculating it all out, the max loss would be $2.6m per year if we were unable to renegotiate and unable to sell the eight unclaimed football games (and 20ish basketball games) to anybody.
I think we need to grab or try for arizona etc now
We will soon have another thread or two such as “My special take on the PAC 12 media deal because nobody is paying me enough attention in the existing threads.”
Let’s get this to 10,000 posts and set the modern Internet record.
This explains why it’s taking so long for the PAC10 to get a deal.
Paywall
Kliavkoff has been lying to his PAC10 schools.
Three people with knowledge of the discussions said commissioner George Kliavkoff is struggling to find partners willing to pay close to what the league is seeking. Two of those sources said Kliavkoff overpromised his members on how many bidders there would be and what dollar amount they could command — a target north of $40 million per school, according to one league athletic director. Today, it’s uncertain whether the Pac-12 will even be able to exceed the $31.6 million average the Big 12 reportedly landed in a six-year extension with ESPN and Fox it reached last fall.
“(We) don’t have a deal because it hasn’t been good,” said the AD.”
I found this part interesting:
The Pac-12, by contrast, has found fewer bidders since going to the open market. Fox, for one, has expressed little interest now that the Los Angeles schools are part of its prized Big Ten package. And CBS (Big Ten and Mountain West) and NBC (Big Ten and Notre Dame) are set in college football for the next several years. However, one Pac-12 administrator did indicate a new player emerged shortly after the new year.
I can’t figure who that might be. I’d assume a streamer. Could be Apple… or could be someone small-time like FloSports. The ideal scenario is that it’s CBS. I’d consider making the pitch “For every game you put on CBS, we’ll let you put one on CBSSN and another on Paramount+. and we’ll put non-FB stuff on PlutoTV”… but I don’t think CBS has the money laying around.
And it sounds like overall volume is indeed the issue the Pac-12 needs to solve. Canzano said that Amazon wants volume after all. Marchand said otherwise, but these actions are more consistent with what Canzano is saying. But as others (Neighbors, Kurtz…) are pointing out, if you’re having to get SMU and SDSU just to get them at the table… that bodes ill. And that’s the only way I see those two adding value, which reportedly very much is their motivation (as opposed to conference-building).
I don’t know. This all sounds so bad for the Pac-12. So much so I wonder what I’m missing for there not to be more talk of teams bolting. Mandel’s contains more negativity from Pac-12 sources than anything I’ve seen in a while.
So bottom line like many of us had suspected. Kliavkoff is a fraud
My takeaway is less that he’s a fraud and more than he is bad at his job. (Or, more charitably, mishandled the situation in such a way that should cost him his job.)
LOL this is the second time I come to post something only to see that you just posted it.
Strong words from Wolken, who can rarely muster any for anything that isn’t the SEC or sometimes the ACC.
From the leading internet authority…
I have spoken…
I appreciate all of your deep dive analysis on expansion but this guy assured everyone that a better than B12 deal was lined up months ago. Now in Feb, he is scrambling to cobble something together? This is a huge embarrassment. The excuses have been a huge embarrassment and I would guess at least 1 of the 4 corners has made decisions based on a deal that never existed. They should be p!ssed.
I thought I saw somewhere the SDSU AD quoted as saying that they want a PAC full share from the get-go or they’re thinking Big 12. I think a reduced share $10 million PAC offer would pretty much send them our way.
$10 million with all those long flights for smoo. Yikes.
Don’t they already get $7 or $8 milion in the AAC?
What if SMU rolled out the red carpet and Kliavkoff said “Uh, thank you, but no thank you.”
That would be awesome but Pac is in desperation mode now
