A Cathartic Letter

I’ve always tried to subscribe to the policy not to write or say anything right after a game because the mouth or fingers often engage before the brain does. Today, this feels like therapy.
Coach Bill Yeoman said “it’s never easy being a Houston Cougar.” That was never more evident than last night in San Antonio.

To those players who have given 1,2,3,4,5 or even 6 years to the basketball program and played this year, thank you. To those redshirts who didn’t play, but were there in practice to make us a better team, thank you as well. Finally, thank you to the coaching staff.

We are all going though our various stages of grief this morning. Some more than others. My wife cried for me last night. My grandson sent me a text with broken heart emojis saying “Sorry Grandpa.”

This is not the most painful loss, it’s still 1983. Going into the tournament that year, we were expected to win the national championship. This year, we had a really good team. We dared to hope, but we knew there were other really good teams out there. I don’t think any school had to face a gauntlet of teams in the tournament as well as playing in “neutral” sites like this one did.

Some of our younger posters who have really only experienced Cougars basketball in the Kelvin Sampson era might say “wait ‘til next year.” Those of us my age or older, I’ve followed the Cougars for almost 50 years, know how difficult it is to get as far as we did and come up short. I hope it doesn’t take another 41 years to get to this level, I don’t think it will, because I won’t be around to see it.

This morning, I feel for Emanuel Sharp. I’m not going to focus on the end of the game. Nobody, and I mean nobody, feels worse than he does this morning. He probably feels he let everybody down. He didn’t. You win as a team; you lose as a team. Time and time again he came through for us in clutch moments. We don’t get to where we are without him.

I guess we can take some solace this morning. I see multiple sites that have us listed as the favorite to win the title next year.

As I mentioned earlier, I’ve been a fan, which is short for fanatic, for almost 50 years. Anyone writing on this board late into the night/early morning or rising up early can’t be anything other than a fanatic. It’s who we are. Even our site describes us.

The last thing I would like to mention for our board is the trolls. We all know who they are. They only show up when things aren’t going well. Dealing with trolls is like rolling in the mud with pigs. You both get muddy and the pig enjoys it. Block them. It makes reading the board more enjoyable.

Looking out my window, I see the sun rising. We’ll survive, we always do.

Thank you for writing this. You articulated my feelings about this game far better than I could myself. As you say, the sun is rising. We move on.

Great post.

I feel so sad for the kids. For the coaches and their families. And for the countless fans who showed up to support.

As for Emmanuel Sharp, we wouldn’t be at the championship game without him. He didn’t let anyone down. I’m so proud of him and all he’s done for our program. I’m proud of all of them.

I got that text message too. Two good kids there. But yeah this sucks.

But then again, our alma mater’s motto isn’t In Tempore for nothing. And for what it’s worth, it seems like every year we get a little closer, a little better, a little stronger. We’re so close now, and the conditions that kept us out of the title game for 41 years - and even what precipitated the apocalypse we survived - aren’t there anymore. We’ll be back and sooner than we think.

The 2001 Miami football team was perhaps the greatest college football team ever because of a systemic snub worse than ours - they weren’t even given the chance to play for a title. The underclassmen took that to heart and vowed revenge on everyone. They got it. They went undefeated in 2001 and 38 on their roster became pros.

I see a similar opportunity before our basketball program - they didn’t get over the hump this time, they did almost everything right, now they can come back and leave absolutely no doubt this time.

And that starts with one Emanuel Sharp. Gonna root extra hard for that guy next year - how he chooses to spend his senior year is going to dictate the tone of next year’s team. I hope he goes the revenge path.

Fred, you hit a homerun. Just well said. Hope I see you in Vegas in November. There will be a very young but promising Cougar basketball team. The sun is just starting to rise here in Northern Arizona this morning and as always, it is beautiful.

Beautiful. Reading this made me feel better. Thank you.

Wow. Thank you for this Fred. Incredible write up.

I agree. No one really had us winning it all this year.

But now that the returning players know what it’s like to be at The Game, those nerves will be lessened next year.

Sharp has unfinished business and this should light a fire under him. And the freshmen on the team now have a chip on their shoulder.

The baton has officially been passed to the 2025-2026 team.

I think Milos and Sharp would really benefit from having a big that can stretch the floor. Look forward to getting next seasons team constructed.

Beautiful post. It made me feel a little better. Thank you. I’m heart broken and I feel like I’m grieving. This is so awful, but I love these guys so much.

This is my first season posting on this board and I love that I have found a community that shares my passion for this University.

Thank you guys for being awesome and passionate. I consider all of you my friends.

I had number of texts from friends etc after the game. They understood how much this game meant to me. I appreciate it. But like Duke coach said, you have to take the losses as well.

Good write up and he is correct 1983 hurt the worst, i really believed that we were going to erase that memory last night but alas more pain for us, don’t know how much more of this I can take lol

Thank you, my only bone to pick, that every media story is making out like it was some furious last second comeback or blown lead by Houston, when Houston’s 12 point lead was a quick run out of halftime with 17:00 minutes on the clock.

A 12 point lead with 17:00 minutes is not a last second comeback

Welcome.

I’ve been posting on coogfans since its creation in its original form in 1999, and on UH fan boards since 1995 (started on the original Cougars’ Den on flash.net).

It’s been great to see the growth in fan interest over the years.

Thank you for that.
I’m one of those “newer” fans that started during the last few years of Penders. The early heart breaks were before my time. I have faith in Sampson that we’ll be back. Hopefully sooner rather than later. I’m looking to the future now. I’m looking forward to the amount of talent we’re getting and hopefully the other starters returning.

I got a number of texts last night and many condolences this morning at the office. We’re all hurting at the moment but we’ll bounce back. Stronger than ever and with more fervor than ever. For the City!

I’ll share my thoughts as well, writing really helps, even though it brings tears…

You can not experience the highest of highs without feeling the lowest of lows…

This past weekend had both. And I couldn’t be more grateful to @uhcougarmbk for providing so much joy. I’m incredibly sad for our players, but also, I am so incredibly proud of them. I wish every single one could come back next year. I’m going to miss this team so much, but I know we will have another amazing year next year with old and new faces to cheer for. And I can’t wait to see what greatness our basketball alumni achieve. I look forward to following them all as they go on to many future successes. Thank you for another amazing basketball season, you have brought immense gladness.

As always, this house is #ForTheCity x #GoCoogs x #TrueWellEverBe

True , the 1983 was the best team on paper and expected to win with all that nba talent.

This yr, I expected a deep run but not necessarily a final 4 or championship game.

They exceeded my expectations and the whole nation saw us giving Fla all they could handle vs a blowout loss.

Many teams never make it this far and just being in that championship game put us back on the map in the eyes of so many. I had OU fans in New Orleans talking to me about UH when I was there this weekend.

This was major pub in a good way bc they all know Fla barely escaped with a win and they won the Sec title.

No shame in this loss if a loss had to happen.

Beating Duke is historic.

Also we will be back bc we have the formula which is tough defense.

I don’t know if any of you guys use the Facebook, but man, the whole city was rooting for us. Lots of posts from all over Houston, mostly organizations, saying go Coogs, or good luck Coogs. Even TXDOT put Go Coogs on their highway signs! Who says we don’t get support?

Driving home, Memorial City had changed their lights to Red to support the Coogs!

It was nice getting some bandwagon fans and casual supporters to come out of the woodwork. I hope we captivated some of them to stick around.

It is painful, but nothing like 1983. Still, crazy proud of all the kids, and the coaching staff. Win or loose, they do it the right way. Can’t wait til next year!

On the bright side for me there is little to no chance I will be up until 4am agonizing about our loss like I was last night. Man the first 24 minutes basically went exactly how you would draw it up and then the fouls came and then the lack of execution followed. Brutal. But UH will live to fight another day!
