2023-24 Houston Cougars Basketball Season

I remember as a kid my grandfather used to get all kinds of tickets/comps….courtside Rockets, Astros would be box seats above the dugout or club box tix…the Oilers tickets carried as well….sometimes in the lower bowl….but the absolute best we’re the “sky box” tickets at the very top of the dome….as a kid I remember having to ride an elevator to get there….then it was a free buffet with a beautiful spread….turkey, roast beef and potatoes, tons of pies and cakes….LOVED IT!

Great Memories

Hopefully we get a good draw in the Charleston Classic. Play 2 tournament teams (St Johns, Wake, LSU, and/or Dayton)

A&M is a projected tournament team. Xavier, who knows. At Xavier should be a Quad 1 game

Now we wait for the conference schedule

I guess I get it!?!? I’ll be there but it’s REALLY TOUGH getting excited about that home OOC slate!

none of those 3 are projected tourney teams, st johns (bcus pitino) is the only one seen as even a possibility

a&m is the closest thing we have to a lock at a q1 game and tournament team… but being in the big 12 the q1 games dont matter as much

Sorry, I’m out of the loop. What’s the rough depth chart look like for this season?

Is the A&M game part of the season ticket package?

no.

Sweet, appreciate it! That’s a formidable team.

I would guess

Shead at PG
Cryer at SG and PG (Baylor transfer)
Dunn at WG (Temple transfer)
Roberts at PF
Francis at C

With Sharp, Arcenenaux, Wilson and RWalker off the bench in the backcourt

And newcomers Tugler, McFarland and Lath off the bench in the frontcourt.

When does the conference schedule get released?

@Hill checking Twitter. Looks like last year it was mid September

Dang, who wants to wait that long!

Joke schedule with A&M, Xavier and another tournament. Ummm okay.

We hear this every season and still, CKS knows what he is doing.

It seems well balanced to go with our Big 12 schedule

Great point. We are no longer in a 2-3 bid league with 2-4 conference games against 7-12 seeds.

We are in the best basketball conference in the nation with 10-12 conference games against 1-11 seeds.

11-7 is a fine record in the Big 12 which typically earns you a 3-6 seed.

Which gives you some leeway with the nonconference scheduling to build momentum and chemistry and get younger players experience.

Does the Big 12 play an 18 or 20 game conference slate?

a too early look at the notable OOC

a&m - top 25 last year, returns 4 of 5 starters, did not add anyone too notable …despite top 25 in the human polls, most computers did not think they were that good. were blownout in the 1st round of the ncaa… not particularly great on offense or defense, but won a ton in conference. overall not a great shooting team but tons of great drivers & the 4&5 are great low post scorers

starters
Wade Taylor IV (16.3 PPG) - star player
Tyrece Radford (13.3 PPG)
Jace Carter (16.6 PPG -at UIC – transfer)
Henry Coleman III (9.0 PPG)
Julius Marble (9.1 PPG)

Xavier- they lose 4 of their 5 starters (only return zach freemantle -15&8), their 6th man is on medical leave (undetermined if he will play basketball again)

most of the bench also transferred… we are basically playing a brand new xavier…

they added a bunch of new players that could be good but no home runs… 3 top100 4stats, but all in the 80+ range.
4 transfers of note: 3 big time scorers from from bad c-usa teams (2 of which we have played), and a deep bench IU transfer:
F/C Abou Ousmane - (North Texas) 11& 6, 6’11
G Quincy Olivari (Rice) 19&6 but terrible defender, 6’3
G Dayvion McKnight (WKU) 16,5&4 and great defender but 6’1
C Logan Duncomb (Indiana)

im honestly not worried about them, but on paper they do got some scorers

the tournament (3 games. as the tournament favorite, game 1 is likely vs a bad towson- worst seed) but getting 2 of these:
st john has an all conference level center, added a 24pt transfer from upenn, and pitinio had his lead guard from iona follow, and 1 top 50 recruit. there are about 7 other transfers but nothing else too notable
lsu- lost a ton, and were a bad team, but added some nice transfers like jalen cook., daimion Collins, will baker … i think theyll improve but not too worried about them
wake- is interesting they return everyone but their star player from last year, a middling acc team (acc was terrible last year, finished 8th), added a 18pt scorer from CMU, and 2 former 5stars that havent lived up thier status in hunter sallis, and efton reid (assuming he’s eligible, 2x transfer)… if they play to their 5star status they actually could be the a legtimate tournament team.
Dayton- was #2 in the a10 but that wasnt good enough to make the NIT, their star center returns, their pg returns, most of everything else is gone. nothing too notable coming in
utah - not very good pac12 team, that is returning everyone but did nothing to make itself notably better

i think we are 1 or 2 notches better than anyone we play in ooc… but something interesting is that every one of note that we might play has legtimate low post scoring/size, even utah who is the worst team i listed, their star player is a 7ft center than does 17&8 and a 5th year senior… 5 of the 7 have better offensive centers than anyone we played last year

Xavier has routinely been good and a win at their place will be a plus.
As much as I don’t care for a&m they were playing real good at the end of the season. Their performance in the NCAA tournament was pretty shocking.
