The Coogs seemed so hell bent on burning clock, over scoring, that it resulted in Gonzaga getting back in the game. I’m hoping J’wan’s quick passes back out had to do with trying to keep him from being put on the line, otherwise he should have turned to the basket and attacked.
It really seemed they were expecting to get fouled, but at some point it became obvious Gonzaga wasn’t trying to foul.
One team we definitely struggled with the press was with Auburn. If we face them again it would obviously be in the championship game and you can rest assured they’ll be pressing us.
It happened a few times over the last couple of weeks of the season when teams got into desperation mode late in games. It’s just a lack of decisiveness, similar to what seems to happen on inbounds plays at times. I think people tend to just forget about that stuff when we end up working through it and holding on to wins.
Teams would never think about trying to do that to us over the course of a whole game, but it has been disruptive at times, especially the trap near midcourt. We’ve been pretty good at managing the full court press, aside from a couple of 10-second calls and turnovers. We’re sometimes a little slow to recognize and adjust to the aggressive trapping, though. And refs have been slow to call fouls in those situations.
