UTRGV adding football

I attended a highschool bball camp there back in the day. The main thing I remember is the unreal humidity down in the valley. It was literally like walking through water.

Wife went to school at Texas Southmost College which merged with Pan American before it became UTRGV. Football may be good for the area and with SpaceX now coming in.

I grew up down there (Weslaco) before my dad took a job in Falfurrias. I can only say that they’re going to have to import their players from elsewhere since valley teams get quickly drummed out of the TIL football playoffs due to no talent. UH had a lineman recruit from Falfurrias many years ago who didn’t make it pass season opening practices. Baseball should be very good though.

I also a recall safety out of Harlingen or Weslaco named Bear Crouch who was signed by Yeoman in the early eighties but left after his redshirt year.
PS-He nonetheless remains a member of my all -time cougar name team. Lol

Priority one :Go heavy on Htown connected coaches.
Regular trips 350 (?) miles north should stock them w some FCS level talent.

They are fine tuning the fundraising and are an Under Armor school.

It’s a little too close for a vote.of 5,784 students.

Sumlin to UTRGV!!

Their undergrad enrollment is around 27,000, so the turnout on that was
not good.

Honestly, it’s kind of surprising when any kind of vote like that passes these days.

How many years before they are ranked higher than UT-Austin in the playoff poll?

How long did it take UTSA, 11 years to be exact. Their first coach was Coker who won a natty at Miami.

Waste of cash - but you can tax students for the hell of it

Same colors as UT Donkey Show

“UTRGV is budgeting around $700,000 for football salaries this fiscal year which will increase to just over $1.5 million in the following year as the staff expands to full operational capacity. This coaching salary budget should be highly competitive at the FCS level — fellow WAC member SFA spends roughly $485,000 on their head coach and coordinator salaries, so UTRGV’s budget puts them at around a 45% increase over the top program in their conference”

“administration is zeroing in on playing the majority of their home games at HEB Park in Edinburg. The stadium is less than four miles from the UTRGV Edinburg campus and seats just under 10,000. If approved, the Vaqueros would share the stadium with the FC Toros of the United Soccer League.”

“The university will be the first in the nation (to my knowledge) to support two separate spirit squads and marching bands — one for the Edinburg campus, and one for the Brownsville campus”

They’d be a great FCS add. UTRGV was a good combo to make and their medical school is pretty solid. I know someone who did their fellowship (sub-specialty) there and is now a hospitalist at the border, making >$375k.

Good reason to go catch a game that far south: Vera’s Backyard BBQ in Brownsville (hour east). The only place in Texas that is allowed to make traditional barbacoa.

Sounds like a super opportunity for Lyin’ Tom Herman.

nice

As someone who grew up in the Valley, it’s great to see all of this coming together. I predict a great future for their sports programs.

This also gives more opportunity for high school football players in the valley. The area is highly underrecruited.

One of the qbs for the area broke several state passing records but ended up at a D3 because teams wouldnt recruit the valley. Definitely the type of player UTRGV could have used.
