This is the REAL travesty with Holgerson!

Yeoman recruited The State of Texas, and parts of La.

Gary Mullins was from San Angelo. McVea from San Antonio. Newhouse from East Texas, Riley Odoms from Corpus Christi, Danny Davis from Dallas, Wilson Whitley from Brenham, on and on.

Yeoman got solid players from Houston but did not limit himself to only that area. His future NFL RB in 1966, Dickie Post, was from Oklahoma.

Dana can follow that model. Tune is from Greater Dallas. McKaskill from greater Houston. Lots of talent in Texas and Louisiana. We also have players from another talent rich State, Georgia.

East and Southeast Texas. A few from Dallas and Louisiana. I’m oversimplifying this a bit but that would be the bulk.

Off the top of my head, here are some of the more celebrated recruits UH has signed and what high school they came from. I’m missing a ton of players so please add your favorites.

Warren McVea - San Antonio Breckenridge
Lee Canilito - Houston Sterling
Riley Odoms - West Oro
David Hodge - Brazoswood
Hosea Taylor - Longview
Maceo Fifer - Kerrville
Darrell Shepard - Odessa
Jeff Bergeron - Port Neches
Wilson Whitely - Brenham
Mack Mitchell - Diboll
Carl Hilton - Galveston Ball
David Klingler - Stratford
Andre Ware - Dickinson
Ed Oliver - Westfield
Deontay Greenberry - Washington Union, California

Don’t the assistants do most of the recruiting?
Don’t the assistants do the coaching?
We will get the recruits once in the Big12 AND winning.
Dana needs to upgrade some of the assistant coaches pronto!

Thanks; nice list. Elmo Wright from Sweeny should be on the list too.

So, we’ve picked up a few from the area with HoF coach, but not like we ever really
dominated the Houston recruiting area. But a handful of playmakers can really
make a difference

There you go. He recruited quite well. He got his share of what we call 5 and 4 star players today. Hosea Taylor’s, Darrel Sheppard, Warren Mcvea and the like too many too count

With Fickell going to Wisconsin, could we see Herman land at Cincinnati? Would suck for us, iMHO.

Ha.

Herman screwed the pooch in recruiting.

Elmer Redd was responsible for landing a whole lot of our prize recruits back then, including Wilson Whitley.

Elmer is still a legend in Lufkin and East Texas!

He’s a legend at my house here in Katy as well.

Yes, he was responsible for our dominance in East Texas. Another one JL forgot is Lloyd Archie from Huntsville. He was the #1 player in the state in ‘80, I think it was. He got kicked off the team his freshman year for stealing a cow.
Yes, for stealing a cow.

We don’t tolerate cattle rustlers in Texas.

Elmer Redd and Don Todd. Tom Wilson was Athletic Trainer but when kids met him, they knew he would work their tail off and make them better.

You are assuming that CDH has alienated local coaches and players without concrete evidence.

Recruiting as a P-5 program is infinitely more desirable than as a G-5 program.

“UH has really never had a recruiting advantage in the Houston area and I don’t expect we ever will.”

Isn’t UH getting some of the best BB recruits in the Houston area year after year? Of course, BB is not in the cellar.

The real travesty with Holgerson is: he is harming the players. Some are being deprived of opportunities do to lack of discipline, coaching, winning, and publicity.

Over the years I’ve heard a lot of UH coaches say they’re going to “build a fence around Houston” but never saw it happen. Seems like each year we would usually sign about three recruits off of the Chronicle Top 100 Houston area players.

Archie had terrible grades at Huntsville and went to junior college.
Coach Yeoman told me he thought Archie was the most talented receiver he ever recruited, including first round pick Elmo Wright.
I knew Lloyd got into trouble but I didn’t know it was cattle poaching lol.
Last I heard many years ago was Archie working at a filling station.
As a former writer I think he would have been a great interview but it never crossed my mind.
