Exactly there are so many UT and Tamu “fans” that didn’t attend the university. I’ve met so many people who are wearing UT gear and aren’t alumni (I went to St. Mary’s but I’m a Texas fan) etc
What really annoys me is the same people complaining about the heat are the same people I see out on the golf course, a boat, tailgating hours before the game with no shade, or fishing trip in the same heat in July.
Y’all know the heat is there, act like the players and condition yourself.
Take a run at the local park when it’s hot out or spend some time at the sauna.
All y’all old folks complaining to the younger generation to suck it up and deal with it need to take your own advice lol.
You are not getting it, of course nobody lives in small college towns with no pro sports, only students live there. Yet they get over 100K for football. Why, it is not because there is no pro sports, alumni travel there. It is like MECCA in College Station on game day. You can blame pro sports all you want, but the problem is apathy. You would think with 7 million people we could find 40K that would like to see a B12 game in Houston. UH has close to half a million alumni within a 90 mile radius from campus, we get about 5% plus 5K students. If your money goes to pro sports and you are an alumni, maybe it is time to go pro.
Dog just wear a hat and hydrate it’s not that big a deal. Most our games are at night now anyway.
I do get it. They just have more passion. Our fan base lacks that. But here in Houston, you have so much stuff going on.
I agree, we have a big alumni, and really we should be doing way better. Of those 7 million… many don’t even like Football. We have a big Hispanic population and many don’t like Football (I am Hispanic myself and my dad only watches Soccer. I didn’t start to watch Football till I was in High School).
“so much stuff going on” is a buzz saying for I got better things to do. If the Coogs are not winning, I will do something else. If we are .500 playing Iowa St., it should be sold out. ISU will bring fans.
As far as adding a canopy to Space City Financial Stadium: I don’t believe we will ever do it. If we did, we would only put it on the south side and west endzone. The stadium is oriented on an east / west line and the sun is always to the south of us. We are at 30 degrees north latitude and the tropic of Cancer (the farthest the sun travels north) is about 23.25 degrees north. It is impossible to shade the north side without blocking the view of the field.
can you blame him? futbol is more fun to watch than football, especially a 4 hr game lol
People attend some of these schools with the goal in mind that they’re going to attend football games. I know people who chose to attend LSU and Auburn for the football culture or the “school culture” ex. do Greek life (which is centered around football). With aTm, going to the football games is an expected norm with attending the university. Plus the students at these schools are younger (18-22) and have more free time to engage with extracurriculars. On the other hand, the vast majority of UH students don’t come in with the goal of attending football games. A lot of the students are non traditional and older in age (not 18-22), just earning a degree so they can have a better life. I knew several students who spent their time either attending classes or working. For ISU, I think it’s similar to OU where since there is no professional team in town, people will attend. You can say that doesn’t make a difference but it does. I know some UH alums who choose to buy tickets to Rockets games instead of UH sports (which I find very annoying) but a sad reality. It’s simple, if a student doesn’t attend at least 1 game during their time at UH, they will never come back as alumni. I attended almost every game when I was a student and continued after I graduated.
My work takes me to Ann Arbor, Michigan often. During football months, the hotels are booked with Michigan fans. The ppl attending the games are travelling to the games and many from pro sports towns like Detroit, Chicago, Indy etc. so, all these excuses that the stadiums are full bcoz ppl have nothing else to do is baloney. The stadiums are full bcoz lot more ppl care about Michigan sports then those caring about UH sports. Very little to do
It’s culture, and UH hasn’t made attendance a priority up until now. Maybe Eddie Nuñez will have the magic touch that has eluded so many.
We don’t have generational fans, old money alums, or a big support group from non-alumni.
Many of us went to UH as either first generation college students, GI Bill, relocated from another city, only affordable option, or just wanted the degree.
Even once we graduated, a majority of us don’t have rich families and we all still had to contribute or help out someway with the household.
posted to wrong thread, sorry
We can blame the fans, but we had decades of a poorly run athletic department. It will take time to overcome this. I think Fritz will be a piece of the puzzle. We need to adopt a minor league baseball mentality and create an experience people want to be a part of.
This is only your opinion. Lol
Fritz, Nunez and Sampson can change the culture at UH, it will take time.
Because we are pro city UH tries to compete with the pro teams, but we are not a pro team, I have always thought they need to do more to have fun with it. Last week I enjoyed that Raising Cane’s race where the ice tea almost made it past the band. I would also enjoy more kid friendly activities during the game, most minor league parks have full playgrounds. Houston has the Astros but still averages 4-5k at the Space Cowboy games in Sugarland.
I enjoyed the field goal frenzy where the guy in front of student section was sending his kicks into the upper deck! I hope they kept his number for Coach Fritz to get ahold of…
There are many UH fans that never attended UH as well. I welcome them with open arms.
The students broke their ticket record two weeks in a row. They claimed more tickets for this past Rice game than tickets that were claimed for UNLV, Louisville, Texas, etc.
This isn’t a student issue, it’s an alumni issue. Get your buddies to Space City Stadium.
