I think what makes it complicated is that gun violence, especially in specific demographics/communities, is largely a result of capitalism and culture created by the negative effects of capitalism.
How is it fair that people who have the privilege of building wealth generationally, have a voice to determine whether or not social classes far below them should have access to firearms legally? Especially if its for protection.
Secondly, mass shootings (specifically targeted shootings such as schools and malls), were not in the mind of the founders when they came up with the second amendment. However, an argument can be made to suggest that AR15s werenât in their minds either
Thatâs not my point. Iâm not arguing that if you implement strict gun control regulation that it would lower gun violence in communities of low income.
My point is that gun violence in low income communities exist because of the very fact that theyâre low income. Regarding black communities, much of their economic disadvantages is largely linked to the centuries of legal, systemic racism, which has prevented from black communities from thriving.
While gun control may reduce crime in low income communities, it doesnât fix the problem of why the gun violence occurs in the first place, which is largely stemming from fiscal-rascism and systemic racism.
One main factor (not the only) for urban sprawl in America was for white families to escape black people, and then what followed this strategy were laws set in place that made it impossible for black people to live in the same neighborhoods.
Still to this day, white flight occurs when black people move into historically white neighborhoods (home values decline), which leads to a decline in a suburb, which results in underinvestment, which results in crime.
The cycle repeats
edit: Off topic, but in addition to the above, urban sprawl is one of the biggest contributors to climate change. So urban sprawl itself, isnât even sustainable because it requires deforestation and the construction of concrete civil infrastructure (in other words, the entire blueprint of Houston, TX).
If we want to curb the effects of climate change, urban sprawl must end, racial integration must improve, and older neighborhoods near city-centers must see reinvestment.
But thatâs a discussion on racism and lack of generational wealth in black communities. Which goes back to
slavery and how freed slaves had zero assets at time of being emancipated.
But this is a thread on gun violence in
America.
Maybe you would be for a program to put more guns in to the black community so they could defend themselves better? Clearly they need more guns until the wealth discrepancy gap is closed.
Also, are you claiming the 3,828 white homicides were low income whites ?
Black people werenât even allowed to participate in capitalism fully until the mid-late 1900s, but the he effects of the racism still impacts them to this day.
The emancipation proclamation was more about the Industrial Revolution and preserving the union rather than freeing soaves purely out of ethics. Black people were still not considered equal for hundreds of years following.
No, Iâm not saying gun violence doesnât occur in white communities, but the difference is that white people never had to deal with systemic racism that got them into those circumstances
Generally speaking true. But Jews have had to deal with racism and I donât think all
Jews are rich. Hispanics deal with systemic racism ( not to the historical degree as blacks) also I think.
But weâve veered off into general gun violence and not mass shooter gun violence, in which whites are the primary perpetrators.
