Malone came along at the perfect time…
Moses Malone was recruited out of high school in Petersburg, VA, by UH Assistant Basketball Coach Harvey Pate. Malone was the #1 recruit that year and ended up signing with Maryland, but I believe he was the first high school player to go directly to the pros, to the Utah Stars of the ABA.
Malone played for Houston soon enough, a couple of years later with the Houston Rockets. About 10 years later, Malone was tutoring Olajuwon on being a big man in the NBA.
