Nothing wrong with that location - blame corporate for making them change the look
That McDonaldâs was the first place I ever ate on campus⌠Me and my dad stopped there when we visited the campus.
That place was pretty cutting edge back in 1991. They had printers, a copier and a FAX MACHINE!!!
Kind of weird in hindsight, but that was just about the height of technology then. I never had enough cash to afford to eat at McDonaldâs so that was the one and only time I ate there in college â so I donât know if anyone ever used that fancy technology. (I was more of a 39¢ Taco Bell bean burrito guy, and usually had to borrow some money to help pay for thatâŚuntil I started selling plasma, which allowed me to step up to the 99¢ Whopper )
Although there are some dilapidated buildings in the neighborhood north of Elgin, there is a lot of redevelopment going on and some older homes are well kept.
Here are a few pics of homes and small apartment buildings in that area.
I do remember being wowed by the tech in that McDâs back then, but my go to was the 2 smoked sausages for a dollar at the charter gas station across from melcher.
Will be glad when they get Scott street cleaned up and newer development, itâs such an eye sore for the university
Great pics , thanks
Does anyone know why the city hasnât condemned the dilapidated houses North of Scott ?
Some buildings are boarded up and others look unlivable. Maybe dilapidated was a bit strong but I assume property owners may be trying to sell them. Hopefully the city or some government agency gives tax credits for redeveloping properties in areas like this.
I remember reading something where Garnet Coleman said something to the effect that they have a committee or council that ensures the right people buy land in that area so it doesnât go through some sort of gentrification.
Same here neighbor. Iâve been near Scott/OST since 2013. House value has doubled, closing in on tripling. Love being so close to UH for all the games.
If yâall want to live near UH and have money , Iâd buy bc that area will be like the inner loop and expensive in the future. Itâs a cheap gold mind. Itâs one of the last areas to get or need development. Light rail is there and so close to downtown. Itâs gonna boom in that area down the line.
Buy a lot and wait
Easier said than done. But yes I agree, i bought a property there and the land appraised more than the house.
I drove through the neighborhood north if Elgin a few months ago and was really surprised to see all the nice development. A lot of new being built and a lot of old has been boarded. A little at a time that entire area has cleaned up and will continue to on both sides of Scott.
Also some economy student housing being built on Scott about a quarter mile away.
LaSallette Place? Foster Place?
Iâm further south, in South Union.
They still have some cheap lots and land. Someone is gonna get rich buying now and holding.
UH should just buy out those lots gradually as they come available.
Near the intersection of La Salette & Luca. Been an interesting experience to say the least, but would absolutely repeat. Cheers
