Not adding a big tells me the cost for any good big was out of reach for the program. A lot of small ball this year which doesnāt bother me as long as the guards are aggressive on the boards.
way more aggressive this year, last year he was hesitating even on open shotsā¦ so far in the scrimmages if he even hints he is open he is taking the shot ā¦but he still isnt much if you put defense on him ā¦
his biggest asset is his defense but its hard to tell how much that he has improved from the level of teams weve played
His athleticism and length are there but still think he needs to take a step up on DF. He still plays too often on perimeter like a HS big against guards thinking he can catch up and get back in play. Also think he needs to be more of a wall on traps when playing small ball 4 as he allowed guys to escape a little to easy by bodying him off.
Hopefully Shead gets to rest more this season but not sure what you think everyone is expecting. He will still play a lot of minutes. What I would love to see is Shead being able to sit the last 5 min of blowouts and playing less than 35 min of tightly contested games.
With Wilson, Cryer, Sharp, Dunn and Arceneaux it isnāt too hard to imagine a combination of three of them being productive with Shead getting some extended rest.
My hope is that not signing a big is symptomatic of being a G5 for so many years and lagging behind in donors. That my friends is about to change. UH basketball will have at least several, national. showcase games this season and probably a mention every Saturday on ESPNās Gameday. The team, the coaches and the administration is doing its part and now we need more fans to step up.
Lots of corporate dollars in the city of Houston wanting to be associated with a winner.
Wilson has by far been the biggest surprise for me. Just watched him hit a jumper then a open three in the corner.
I hope we get the full story on how the off-season went. He seems like he could be a key contributor for the year after we were sure heād be gone in the portal.
Iām telling yāall I think itās because heās playing the 5 a lot. I think if we had him at full time 4 we would see that relentlessness more often. Itās hard for someone his size heās not even listed at true 6ā7. He has to battle guys way bigger than him. He not coming in flying from a he weak side like he and Justin used to do. The guy he was going against last night was 6ā10 240. He also is our only source of offense from the bigs which is more tiering. No Fabian or justin to give you 9-10 a game.
i think its way too early to tellā¦weve shown higher offensive output but its mostly coming from 2 players and those 2 from the 3pt lineā¦ we probably have to wait and see how efficient they are on a game to game basis
if we become heavily reliant on sharp/lj and they are efficent, then it makes sense (might even bring back the high amount of transtion 3s like we used to have with corey/armoni). removing lj/sharp, it probably requires slower pace, even slower than last yearā¦increasing the pace only makes sense if you are certain you can outscore your opponents if need be. we have very limited offense from the true bigs. and every guard not sharp/lj isnt just thowing up shotsā¦ theres a point in the game (even the announcers noted it)ā¦where i believe it was shead, mylik and dunnā¦and dunn would drive, only to pass it out to mylik, who would drive, to just pass it back out to shead, who would drive and just pass it back out to dunn. it took long possessions as none wanted to force a tough shot
i agrere with what you said but also for another reason within that same context
it not just becuase jwan is trying to box out āhuge centersā which he didnt have to do 2 years ago (which is true)ā¦but he still isnt a dominant rebounder now even though he is back at the 4ā¦i think the other part of the equation was we had some at the 5 who could box out the dominant center. carlton occupied the attention of the opposing bigs (either him boxing out the bigs, or the bigs fightingh trying to box him out) ā¦ there were lanes to rebound. he is back at the 4 but he doesnt have the box out threat of carlton to clear opposing bigs ā¦ we have no weight at center, we have no one on roster beside lath bigger than 240lbs and lath isnt getting pt
Some guys have the girth to play down low despite not being very tall. B Brady was that type of guy as was Walker last year.
This year we seem to lack an inside guy that can clear space. I suspect J Roberts is still recovering from his injury, which is why heās not going on it too hard down low or shooting much. Francis is Francis. I donāt see that changing much.
Love what Iām seeing from Tugler. I fully expect him to play a lot this year.
