New uniforms connect UH to THE CITY in all new way

Our merch has always been suspect. No defined branding. We break basic marketing principals all the time.

I still chuckle at the University of Houston at Houston shirt that made the internet a few years ago.

It’s obvious we are risk adverse. Why produce 10,000 tshirts if there’s a risk they won’t sell? We need to be bold moving forward.

My buddy is doing the same thing.

His wife is taking the logo off a hat he found in a clearance bin and putting it on the Columbia blue shirt in the background.

While that would have been a good idea, I can understand why they didn’t. If they had people preorder now before making anything, that saves the problem of if the unis fell flat, so you’re right in that thinking.

The department likely can’t (contractually) sell merch themselves so they would have to get Follett or whoever has the stadium sales on board. The logistics of that and what Follett would want to do or be capable of handling would be a question (although I think they have the infrastructure to handle it even if they didn’t get another vendor involved). You run the risk of ruining the surprise, which had this leaked out this summer might have not had the impact were getting this week. Then how many different styles do you offer for preorder, and how many is a minimum order before it is worth the extra effort it would take. Then does the athletic department and/or Follett have the personnel to handle all this in the first couple weeks of school.

That’s just a simple analysis though. Now they could now allow some or all licensees to start printing this stuff like they did with Phi Slama Jama and the True UH collections. If the demand is there, while it might take a bit longer, the merch will be available with less time involved from the athletic department and with the vendors taking on all the risk of merch that can’t sell. UH just collects their royalty.

Great thinking! Where is Patch Collections? Never heard of it, @Scotti

This is pretty cutting edge stuff, nobody has done anything like this before. I don’t think they had any idea how big of a hit these were going to be. We have done black out jersey and throwback jersey and there was never a demand for merch like this. I honestly think this could be trendsetting. Can we get some ketchup and mustard Jordan gear for the basketball season? The department screws up plenty but for them not expecting these to be a national hit I can forgive that. According to Parker’s podcast they were thinking about reveling them at the game, I don’t thing they had any idea these were going to hit.

I’m glad they didn’t wait until the game, more impact how they dropped it this week.

I know realize the equipment manager and crew have a lot of work to do with uniforms etc

Its nice to read a reasonable response to the idea the department failed at an easy task

Well I have an understanding of how all that works, my experience may not be as recent with it but I know it isn’t as simple as some would think.

They’re on-line but have their location off the beltway and Gessner. They mostly sell patches - lots of people use them for customized Astro gear

Decent resource for stuff like this

Honestly one of my biggest issues is the huge disconnect between what the team and coaches wear on the field and what they sell in the store. Can we finally get the hat and visor Dana wears?

The Oilers began play in 1960 in Jeppesen Stadium. Right on our Campus.

Right on the spot where TDECU now sits.

This is awesome and hope we wear these Jerseys again.

Maybe the best part of this uniform is that it gives the city a chance to thumb its noses at the Tennessee Titans for taking the Oiler trademarks with them, and refusing to let the Texans use any of the Oiler gear or trademarks in the future. The Coogs’ revival of the Columbia Blue, etc. should serve to endear our university to some old, and maybe not so old, Oiler fans, as well as the Texans’ organization.

I think we should make the change permanently

I love it. Will you be going to the game and wearing it?

Jealous! Sukie is right…you win!

Thats franchise history like the Oilers with the Titans. The equivalent UH franchise history would be Houston Junior College
