It’s great to have unlimited back-up depth, but it doesn’t work that way. The kid may start at his new place, but he probably won’t. Even if he does, that doesn’t mean he would have succeeded here.
Good luck to him. I imagine we can find another 4th string QB.
I get that. I would definitely prefer that Kopp had not transferred or wish we had reason to have a strong indication Massoud will be a quality starter. But we do know that Massoud is ahead of Kopp now and that hopefully neither of them would have been starting next year. If Kopp came in and crushed it, was no. 2 behind Tune, and looked like a clear heir apparent to take over after next season, I’m sure he wouldn’t have transferred.
As is I just chalk it up to the nature of juggling the position that a guy who might have been fourth string next year and has another young QB ahead of him wants to leave. If Kopp lights it up at CU and either next year or a year from now we don’t have any good option to start after Tune then that’s when I’ll see the transfer as an indictment of Dana.
Right right. Time will tell. Just want a reliable duo like Ward/Postma or Keenum/Turner where there isn’t a significant drop off in production from QB1 to QB2. If Massoud or Edwards can handle it then it alleviates all the immediate worry for now.
Personally I don’t think Tune’s replacement in two years is even on campus. Holgy really never showed confidence in any of his backups. At least Kopp had a good excuse since he was a first year freshman. The others have been around long enough to make an impression.
Lol @RedDragonCoog saying he’s good enough for Colorado and not us. Have you seen Colorado football? This isn’t Kordells Colorado. They’ve had 1 fluke season over .500 over the last 15 years. Every other year is a 4 or 5 win season. So the answer is YES, maybe he’s good enough for Colorado but to a team like ours who wants to compete at higher levels and has expectations when we fire 7 and 8 win coaches… maybe he isn’t good enough. Maybe he thought he was gonna be given a silver spoon here. Only he can answer that.
Post Gary Barnett Colorado football has been a dumpster fire. So just cuz they’re “P5” or PAC don’t compare them to us. Different programs. Different trajectories. Different recruiting grounds
I hope the best for Maddox and his family…I know his dad quite well, and their family is top notch…wonderful folks. Just selfish and sorry they aren’t part of our Cougar Family.
Do you honestly think Dana is not letting Kopp demonstrate his skills? Kopp may have dazzling clip-board measurables but if one isn’t ready then they aren’t ready. Personally, I couldn’t care less what Colorado does. They never win squat. But I trust Dana, as the program executive officer, I think is evaluating and moving every last piece of personnel around to make his team as good as it can be. We don’t know why one guy is #2 and another isn’t. But I guarantee you Dana knows.
In the last 15 years we have had 4 excellent college QB’s (Kolb, Keenum, Ward, and Tune)
During that stretch, I am not sure other than OU if a school in this area can match those 4 over the last 15 years.
I guess my point is, we seem to do ok at that position. There have been misses (O’korn, Piland) and one unknown (King). But overall, this is the one position we have gotten right.
