JD: Breaking down 2017 UH football: Quarterback

If Allen wins the job and Sells can be a good backup, we might be able to use both Postma and King at WR.

Wondering what our offense will look like next year. I’m assuming we keep the Urban Meyer offense which means we need to find a way to run the ball next year. This offense isn’t designed for 300 yard passing games needed to win games. Allen doesn’t have Ward’s mobility which could be a problem if the line doesn’t do their part.

Remember the system he was playing in. That’s not great by any means. The film that we have seen of him was not in his favor. His mechanics were all over the place. This was true from his footwork, stance, timing and even decision making. Our Freshman OL will mature. As far as I am concerned competition is key for all positions. That include QB’s. Nothing is set in stone friends. The best will start. Kyle might no or might.

Regarding mechanics, look at GWj’s progress last year. Look at the progress of Dak (:eyes: Cowboys fans). Allen has had some time with :apple::white_circle: and combine that with CBJ, whom I beleive is going to become a hell of a coach. I expect a above avg showing at the spring game.

I think some people are making too big of a deal about needing a mobile QB behind a bad O-Line. The best option behind a bad O-Line is a QB with a quick release and quick decision making. Nothing frustrates a D-lineman more than not even getting a chance to get to the QB and makes them stop rushing as hard every play. That and of course a good running game. Maybe just my opinion, but defensive lineman seem to get motivated to hit a mobile QB that holds onto the ball too long even if he makes them miss a bunch.

FACTS!

I think you have some good points. If you need proof that short passes are not always a given, look no further than Brock Osweiler. He could miss from 10 and in. Greg was a damn good qb. I hope Allen is awesome, but people fall in love with that white, proto typical NFL type guy. They assume greatness and that’s not always true. Look at what wins in college. The last two national championship quarterbacks were Deshaun Watson, and Jalen Hurts. To automatically say Allen is an upgrade is absurd. Better pure Passer is overrated. Better qb and winner is what you need. I hope he is amazing and wins, but Greg Ward was an excellent college Qb and winner.

Wrong. Has nothing to down with color, ANYMORE. The world has changed since people said blacks were not smart enough to play qb. Time to move on. You sound like my old man lol.

Nobody is saying Greg ward was a bad passer. I havent seen a comment that says KA will be better than GW Jr.

All I’m saying is KA is the best QB on the roster. He has the arm and hopefully the 2 qb coaches we have help him reach his potential.

You are missing the point. I’m white. Many people still like to think of that big, tall, pure passer, and white. It’s not a racist or race thing, but that stereotype is still there. You said dumb, not me. I’m saying people still see a white qb and many assume (pure passer) many still see a black qb and see scrambler… plus I was saying I love Greg Ward. I don’t think people see today’s black qb as dumb. I do think people still see today’s color as a particular type. Same as why a white receiver is usually called a possession receiver even if not accurate.

%58.5 percent for a pocket passer is awful. Those are Brock Osweiler numbers. I’m a fan of Smith, but I recognized that maybe redshirting him for a year, may be the best thing long term for his full potential.

Sells was highly recruited! He was Judas first big recruit. He can run and throw.

Time to lock it up!

100% agree with this.

But in regards to the 2017 UH QB battle, based off of factors that have nothing to do with race, KA is the guy.

Not saying KA is an upgrade over last year, or that prototypical pocket passers are always better than dual threat qb’s.

I agree about Allen. I’m hoping he is our guy. I believe he will be our guy. I also believe he will be great.

Kyle Allen is pretty mobile. In terms of mobilty, he’s no Greg Ward but he also isn’t Matt Schaub.

I love it. Not even to spring practice and we have a QB controversy. It would be a mistake to overlook Postma. The guy is a competitor. Can’t wait for practice to begin.

We sure are amped! Lol

True or not?
Kyle was heavily recruited out of HS
Lost his starting job
Failed to compete
Had to transfer
Bad mechanics
Gets a major, no pun intended second chance
Gets to work with two QB specialists
Unknown:
Giving him the starting job
Expecting great things

We all need to think back about what makes a true winner. I understand we live in the computer/video game age. So far Kyle has not thrown one pass or even won the starting job. When it comes to being a competitor Mr. Postma has shown everyone that he has the heart of a winner. Will he get to the next level? We will know in a few months. I do believe that we have a wide open competition. Just remember how Greg won the job. Nothing was given to him. That is the way it ought to be. That is JD’s opinion but
right now no one has been declared the starting QB including Kyle.

I wouldn’t say “bad” mechanics. He isn’t a pro after all. Our current coaching staff is going to “Coach him up” and bring us yet another QB. Can you feel it? The conditions are great for 17 and then perfect for Bryson/Bowman/King to develop.

Nice to have a QB contraversy though! Keeps eyes on Houston. Still need to keep eyes on Defense though because as of last season is better than the offense. The lost decade is so far behind us! I am excited. Why wouldn’t we sell more season tickets this year?

See y’all at the Spring game! :eyes:

A lot of ability ready to compete for the job . Greg Ward will not be replicated. Not only because of his running ability but for his innate instincts you don’t see often
