Houston 3rd most Debt-ridden city

Oklahoma City is cheap…Inner Loop and Houston and huge parts of the Houston suburbs are no longer cheap and we have some of the highest property tax rates in the country. It’s how Texas collects tax revenue!

Plus, you do not get all of the amenities of the other cities in our population range (i.e. mass transit, urbanity, etc.) and yes, I’ve been to almost all of them.

Other than Houston, I think most other cities in Texas have zoning. But yes, there are not a lot of restrictions from the state on development.

That is not true at all. They can’t predict how quickly their lots will sell and have homes but they know exactly how many lots they have or will have after they divide it. The developers pay for the utility infrastructure and streets, etc. Many times they will even develop a shopping center nearby or depending on what they want to offer, a golf club. That is all cost of developing the land. Also they may set up the home owners association and any municipal utility district if needed. Some of this I already said in an earlier post.

That’s why property tax relief is discussed every two years.

I think it is pretty common misconception to think it all falls into one bucket. Like if you live in the city of Houston and in HISD’s district, all the various taxing authorities use Harris County to collect. So you get one bill. But other areas, like spring Branch ISD or City of Southside place, collect their tax directly so you get two or more bills.

Side note for inner city development. I wonder if the qualified opportunity zone is having the impact that it was intended to have.

Did someone actually compare Oklahoma City to Houston and claim Houston lacks amenities in comparison? lol. Houston is an alpha world class city. Again hating on the city you live in for no reason. Like hating on UH. You got problems.
