Discussion: What is your opinion on Climate Change

Mods - as the owner of this thread, I am allowing a small element of politics in this thread

Just avoid politicians and political parties and it will be ok.

Since global warming didn’t work, it morphed to climate change

Man made. Exxon thawed the ice age. Look it up.

Climate change is real. We have had many climate changes in our past. We have decided to demonize one industry when there is plenty of data that points to agriculture as a major cause. The deforestation of the world to make room for ranches and farms has had a major impact but we only focus on petro-chem.

The Americas were virtually clear cut for farms PRIOR to the europeans coming to America. European diseases killed 80% of the native population which caused reforestation. This caused a mini ice age and climate change throughout the world.

It is about forests. At some point someone is going to decide that killing off 80% of humanity will end global warming.

I find it interesting that everyone points the finger at Exxon for knowing about climate change even in the 80s, and yet countries continued to use their product.

Hypocrisy much?

It’s as if Exxon was the only entity in the world that knew of climate change…

It changes like the weather

Humans are the dominant species. We cause climate change.

But there are motivations of some that want to demonize one thing.

Look up how much our world has deforested in the last 100 years. You will see the cause of climate change.

We absolutely should work to have sustainable environmental practices (including recycling) as clean air, clean water, and clean food is essential to life.

That said, climate changes and there are many factors that affect our climate beyond C02, like the moon, trees, and the sun. Also, we have only been recording our climate for a short period of time compared to the age of our planet. I don’t know that the way the climate has been changing is some sort of natural pattern, solely a manmade issue, or some combination. I just don’t know that we can really control climate change by focusing on CO2 output. We need to consider things such as reforestation, or using more native plants, etc to provide natural solutions. We need to look at our practices that will help us humans cope with the changing climate.

For instance, going to a large strip center to shop - there is a huuuugeee parking lot of concrete. No trees, no shade, just a massive hot parking lot. In a hot day, just going from the car to the building is a killer. We need to consider better ways to use the space to provide natural shade and even natural drainage for rain. That;s just one example.

Lastly, any regulations meant to encourage or promote better practices need to be written in a way that supports innovation. I mean, we shouldn’t have a regulation that says you must use xyz type of system. It should be, you must use a system that can provide x benefit. That will encourage innovation in meeting the goal.

Sadly, climate change is political these days. You will find people who would rather be defiant and provide waste or harmful effects just because they can or think they are making a political statement or owning the libs.

Agree on everything here.

Unfortunately, the biomass industry, which includes turning forests into wood pellets for energy use, is still heavily subsidized and considered “renewable energy” purely from accounting loopholes.

You’re going to have to expand or give an article link to explain that.

Was there some alternative product that provides the same utility?

Carbon Loophole: Why Is Wood Burning Counted as Green Energy? - Yale E360

No there’s not, and there still is no alternative product that provides the density of fossil fuels.

The problem is that most of developed society used fossil fuels throughout every aspect of their supply chain. All of the growth, from industries to the suburbs of America, all are byproducts of fossil fuels.

Capitalism, as we know it today is rooted in fossil fuel use.

I will have to read that in depth later. In scanning ithe article it seems the issue is the concept of “carbon neutrality” and lack of enforcement in the rules for accounting for the net effect of deforestation. Not really an “accounting loophole” which would be a misnomer in my opinion.

I disagree, industrialization would be the correct word to use in that statement.

It takes 3-6 acres of land to feed a human. There are 8 billion people in the world and there is 36 billion acres of land in the world. Do the math.

The reality with climate change (as it was in the pre european Americas) is that we have clear cutted the forests to feed everyone.

We are at our limit given how we eat.

Back in the day, when a country started to reach its agricultural limit it would declare war on other countries to gain more agricultural land AND bleed off the population with war and famine deaths,

Now because of nuclear weapons we can’t do that. So we are in a conundrum. We can artificially create the deaths with bioweapons OR we can re learn to eat AND utilize our urban areas for agriculture.

It is agriculture that is causing this as it has in the past.

“Reforestation” would take decades at least if begun now. Trees don’t mature instantly. And I’m sure it has been liberal communists here in the US who have lead the charge in deforestation. Not even allowing mediation those Godless tree hating traitors.

CO2 emission is the driving culprit. Of course, NASA’s Hansen sounded the alarm two decades ago (and President Bush did about 15 years prior to that believe it or not), and as far as America is concerned (the supposed world leader) guess what faction even today has been driving the ignorance to maintain the denial. 20 YEARS WORTH.

Yes I am aware of China and India, but that doesn’t hinder an enlightened society from taking and assuming leadership. But enlightened? Hilarious. Freaking drawing on a map with a sharpie because he thinks all of you are stupid enough to believe his stupidity.

The “radical” revolution should have been intiated 20 years ago, but the Koch brothers paid off a certain “element” in our country to lie to and deceive their constituents. So now we’re supposed to be advised by people who just a few years ago claimed thst the issue they’re addressing didn’t even exist.

Rapid alternative energy use needs to begin now. The airlines need to convert to the kelp or plankton based fuel I think it was that flew a plane a couple of yesrs ago with a considerable number of airline executives aboard.

Removal of CO2 from the atmosphere needs to be forced like it’s now or never. Where would we be had we forced the issue 2 decades ago?

Private individual vehicle transportation needs to be overhauled to eliminate CO2 emissions from that sector with alternative/renewables fueling them and enhancing the safety factor with computers/AI controlling traffic. The death and suffering from irresponsible, wreckless driving needs to end as does the prospect for death and suffering with the approaching global warming tipping point pointing the way. Responsibility among all of us as individual drivers needs to be assumed. No more drive throughs, MODERATING YOUR SPEED, driving with multiple tasks being consolidated into one trip. LEAD BY EXAMPLE AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND AS A COUNTRY. GET RID OF THE IDIOT BRIGADE.

FYI I no longer own or drive a CO2 emitting vehicle anymore. Yes I am dependent on other vehicles facilitating some of my needs, but even that is accomplished at a minimum. If I buy a vehicle again it will have to be an EV with solar charging as the energy source.

PS Overpopulation is killing us.
