Yea, but Guy was around when recruiting was so much easier. AAU wasn’t around & Guy was so fortunate to have Olajuwon come to Houston. Guy is a bad comparison because he took UH to a couple of final fours. Sampson hasn’t even won us a NIT game, nevertheless a NCAA tournament game.
My point was that Guy V didn’t even have a winning record until year 4 and didn’t make the tourney until year 5. CKS is currently on Year 3 and folks are trying to put him on the seat and he’s had 2 straight 20 win seasons.
I get wanting instant gratification, but sometimes patience is for the best. We want a coach that can win consistently and Sampson has done that. We want a coach that can recruit locally and Sampson has done that. We want a coach that can get things done and Sampson has done that with facilities. We’ve gone from a 200+ RPI, to a 90 RPI, to a 54 RPI in 3 years.
We shouldn’t even be talking about him being on the hot seat right now.
This is not a good job its a school that had bad facilities and no support from fans, alums, and the administration. Sampson has been able to convince the administration to put some money into facilities but we still haven’t got the results we want from the money yet. The lack of support will always keep us from getting those 1 or 2 kids that could put us over the top, because they won’t come to a school with no support they want to go to blue blood programs and play in packed arenas every night.
Barring something catastrophic (see UT this year and subtract the Iowa St victory) next season as a nomadic team, Sampson will get at least one year in the new Fertitta Center and I have no issue with that.
With no home court advantage but UH goes .500 overall & in conference play, he’s gone.
What better time than that to get a new coach in here while opening a new arena. It would be very smart. Not saying they’ll be a big drop off, but if there is enough of a drop off, he is gone.
Can’t be having these type of seasons over and over again where UH wins just enough to calm the masses but at the end of the day, the goal (NCAA Tournament) is not met. I know the program wasn’t that good when CKS arrived here, but how many more years should we give him before we see a tournament appearance or a NIT win ?! One thing is to be a righteous & spoil fan, another is to be complacent.
LOL, I can only laugh at the people wanting to replace Sampson after a pair of 20 plus win seasons and top three finishes in the AAC…
While playing on neutral courts will not be great, you have to consider it can’t be any worse than playing the past few years at the empty Hof.
I just continue to marvel at those who expect to be able to recruit top players under the present circumstances, and then want to fire coach Sampson when he is finally about to get on a level playing field.
When Dickey came aboard and brought in those outstanding recruits, we are very lucky we were not investigated by the NCAA. But Dickey and one of his top assistants ruined the AAU scene for the Coogs…at least until Sampson can build relationships once again.
All that said, I would love to see us work on upgrading our OOC schedule, perhaps playing a couple of really tough teams on the road and the same at home. Sampson has had three years to recruit and I think it is time to expose these guys to tough competition before AAC play.
My opinion remains this…if Sampson cannot get it done here, or at least upgrade the program to the next level, it will not be done in my lifetime, which is probably shorter than most of you guys.
The schedule and team is fine. Getting UConn at home in the first round was a bad draw, Memphis would have been a much better opponent. If the team avoids losses to LSU, Harvard, and Memphis at home they make the NCAA tournament. I think the team simply needs to play with a bigger sense of urgency starting with the first game of the season. Win those three games and UH is 24-7 instead of 21-10. I am convinced that 24 wins with this schedule gets you an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
Why would you want to upgrade the OOC schedule… it could hurt the overall record. Why not wait until better talent comes to campus (2018) Specially with new faces in the front court. Let them get their feet wet first.
Any decent team UH purposely scheduled last season, they lost to.
LSU which just fired their coach blew UH out.
Arkansas blew UH out.
Harvard which was a down year for them & young beat UH at home.
This conference was not conducive to landing a team like UH in the NCAA tournament. Houston in the Big XII, SEC, ACC, and possibly Big East probably makes the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately due to Memphis, UConn, Temple, and Tulsa having down years beating them did not do anything for anyone. The only two signature wins in this conference were SMU and Cincinnati and they are both top 10 type teams. Neither is getting the respect they deserve due to the lack of strength of the conference as all the experts claim the lack of quality wins on their resumes. Next year SMU and Cincinnati will likely not be as good but if UConn, Temple, Memphis, and Tulsa get closer to their usual results and UCF maintains or builds on their success this conference will be deep and have 5-6 NCAA tournament caliber teams.
I am not sure anyone is making a depth argument, other than losing our best frontcourt addition to injury (and he wasn’t the same when he got back), impacted a couple of the close losses to Memphis and Harvard.
I am very encouraged by what Sampson is doing. We are VERY efficient on offense most of the time. The defense improved this year.
The one gaping hole in our defense is preventing the other team from getting offensive rebounds. If we can ever solve that problem, we’ll all be very happy with the outcome.
But it takes time to build the program. These last two years have been as good as any of Penders’ teams. And those Penders teams were the best bunch we’ve seen since Foster was here.
The question is: has Sampson reached a plateau here? I really don’t think so. This year was better than last year. I see room for easy improvement going forward, and I think he’ll get it addressed.
Economically, Sampson is under contract through 2021. He’ll get at least 2 years in the new arena (i.e. 3 more years) to show what he can accomplish. Buckle up. I think it will be a fun ride.
Red I think you and I have been around this program long enough to have some perspective. One of the problems UH has always faced is a fickle fan base.
I remember when Birdsong was here and UH was playing North Carolina in Hofheinz. The place was barely a quarter full. The bouncing balls echoed. The fans stayed home because UH wasn’t ranked. Otis freaking Birdsong vs North Carolina. It was sad. I sat next to some UNC fans. They were stunned by the small crowd. Being real fans they had the silly idea that people should show up especially when the team was down. Foolish guys.
There were several down periods over Lewis’s career. In no instance did fan support help the program back up. Fans only show up when the team is winning. Too many fans like Prog and his obsessive negativity. It reminds me of when Joe B. Hall was at Kentucky and they won the NCAA championship. One of the fans in the stands commented to a reporter, “Great. Now we’ll never be able to fire the coach.” Might as well have been a UH fan.
