Bill proposes to transfer UHV-Victoria to Texas A&M system

LOL …UH tried to force UH-Downtown to change its name…they didn’t ask UH-D staff or students then. Doubt Bettencourt bothered to either.

But hasn’t UH-v had problems with UH?

Oops, you are right; thanks for the correction.

What’s old is new again.

Shutting down operations at the Katy campus was an indicator this was coming. This has been simmering for at least 15 years, and probably longer.

I think that the heart of it is that people in that area identify more with A&M than Houston, even though UH invested in the school and enabled it to grow. They seem to think that the A&M system will turn them into what A&M-Corpus is, which is kind of silly to assume.

Well I see there is a medical center next to campus, so I can see A&M creating a bio-medical school and/or research center there. Remember, A&M has PUF money to invest in them.

I’ve been to that facility. It’s not much of a “medical center.”

One of their big problems is space. They just don’t have enough land around the existing campus to really grow. So they want to build new buildings on a new spot even though their enrollment doesn’t grow enough to support it.

I’m not even sure A&M really has that much interest. It really doesn’t fit the profile of any of the other schools added to their system - small enrollment, tiny campus footprint, no unique programs. They already have system colleges in San Antonio (100 miles away), Corpus (85 miles), Kingsville (110 miles), and several others within 3 hours (Galveston, Prairie View, Laredo, Killeen).

I certainly did. Earned my graduate degree there and proudly wore my robes during HS commencement exercises.

If there’s an archive for this platform, my posts are in there on that very topic. I was livid then, and now my fury is reignited. UHV brought in academic talent and a wide variety of activities, including performing arts.

The mayor of Victoria is on board with this theft. Turns out he’s a graduate of A&M, but that’s just a coincidence, right?

If you care as much about this as I do, join me in writing letters to your state senators.

One of the bills originators is also a A&M grad. A&M wants their name in every town in Texas and with PUF money, they can do it.

This is ours.
Now this.
What about putting a bill that atm should be ours?
It works both ways suckers.

If they don’t think UH cares they sure can’t think Texas A&M will even think about them - but this is probably typical wanna be in the room with certain people to feel important even though they don’t care about me as a whole

Apparently this is a done deal. UH Victoria no more.

Sounds like UH endorsing it.

From Houston Chronicle

A similar measure was introduced in 2011, but ultimately failed to gain traction. However, this time around, the University of Houston System has expressed support for whichever move is best for students.

The University of Houston System has always been deeply committed to the success of our students and the communities we serve through our four universities. With the proposed transfer of the University of Houston-Victoria to the Texas A&M University System, we recognize that the academic programs offered by the TAMU System, specifically in the areas of agribusiness and agricultural economics, may be better aligned to support the Victoria region’s economic growth and local workforce needs," the University of Houston System said in a statement.
“As this process moves forward, we will continue to work closely with Senator Kolkhorst, state leaders and Texas A&M University System leadership to ensure that UHV thrives and continues to serve its students and community effectively. Our priority remains what is best for our students and the state of Texas,” a spokesperson for the University of Houston System said.

What do we get from this?
Do we own the real estate?
Are we bleeding money?

What kills me is the comment from the representative saying that they’ll be more thrilled with Texas A&M University then University of Houston Victoria geez how bad is that?

So it is done but no financial information released?

No, not done, but looks highly likely with bills in the senate and house and
the UHS statement of surrender.

I had no idea the students there were up in arms over lack agricultural classes being offered at UHV.

I’ve seen nothing on the financial side; maybe the game is to play nice with legislators in return for future funding at the 3 remaining institutions in UHS. Seems like a risky strategy imho if that’s the idea. Not sure how the $20 million
endowment will be handled either. Does that go with the transfer ?

University of Houston-Victoria (225502) has an endowment valued at nearly $20.3M, as of the end of the 2022 fiscal year.

Maybe we should be happy bills haven’t been introduced to transfer UH Clear Lake to either UTS or aTm at this point. /s

All it takes is one whiner -

But do the other schools in the system have a say as it dilutes their pot in the A&M system
